Orange County officials, including District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey, met with residents of Horizon West this month to discuss plans
for the future of Horizon West Regional Park and the impact it will have on both the community and, on a larger scale, Central Florida. The meeting, which was held on May 1st at Bridgewater Middle School, was well-attended by residents who are interested in being part of the design process.
What’s It All About?
The focus of the meeting was to discuss the types of amenities the park will feature as well as suggestions and concerns residents
have in the areas noise and traffic. This was the first of three scheduled meetings to discuss the design process. Feedback opportunities occurred at the meeting and the county has created a website where more information will be updated and surveys will be posted.
Proposed Amenities for the Regional Park
The park will sit on approximately 215 acres, located next to Bridgewater Middle School. Focus groups have been scheduled with community
representatives from different areas- sports, seniors, civic groups, HOA’s and more to provide feedback and input on the design process. The next community meeting is scheduled on November 13th 2019 and a final meeting will be held on February 20th, 2020. Representatives from Orange County were both informed and patient when receiving community input from residents. The first phase of the design process is one that the county is taking very seriously as is evident in the year of planning dedicated to connecting with residents and collecting data.
What Do We Want?
Based on current survey results, residents are strongly leaning toward passive and at-will amenities with polled results showing walking,
biking and hiking trails as the highest requested activity with 67% approval. Nature trails, playgrounds and splash pads are trailing closely in numbers. All of these options reinforce the culture of wellness and New Suburbanism trends that are the cornerstone of what makes Horizon
West unique. Access to trails, proximity to nature and a healthy lifestyle are all consistent principles of Horizon West’s master plan.
How Can I Be Involved?
To be part of the ongoing process, voice your suggestions, concerns and ask questions. Orange County has provided a link to a survey in the form of a comprehensive questionnaire with a complete list of proposed amenities. The proposals range from sports fields and courts, botanical gardens, nature trails, an amphitheater, splash pads, dog parks and a host of other potential options. The county has divided amenities into two broad categories: passive/at-will activities, such as hiking trails and kayaking, and active/programmed activities such as sports. Horizon West residents are passionate about what they want and supporting the lifestyle that continues to make this community one of the fastest growing in the nation!
