Deciding to begin an orthodontic treatment is a big decision, whether it’s for a child or an adult. We reached out to Dr. Scott Sakowitz of Sakowitz Smiles - Horizon West’s only Board-Certified Orthodontist - for his expert advice. This complete guide is everything you need to know when deciding whether clear aligners are right for you!
Just like regular braces, clear aligners gradually move your teeth with gentle force. The upside is that they are an attractive aesthetic and less painful option without the use of metal wires or brackets. This can be a great choice for many people!
Most adults, teens and children can be treated successfully with either aligners or braces and are equally able to do either option. Dr. Sakowitz will discuss an individual treatment recommendations during your consultation.
Generally, for shorter and simpler treatments, aligners are faster than braces. For longer and more complex treatments, the time involved is around the same length. Clear aligners are planned using a 3D computer simulation and have a higher level of precision than braces.
They sure can! Clear aligners are designed to move teeth just as you would expect with regular braces. That includes closing gaps between teeth.
Since each clear aligner is designed to move teeth only a very small amount, incrementally over time, you can most often move to the next aligner without any problems. Dr. Sakowitz will let you know what the best plan is for you if an aligner is lost.
Yes! It is important to know that clear aligners should be removed when eating or drinking anything besides cool water. In order to avoid damage or discoloration, dark and hot liquids should not be consumed with aligners in your mouth. It is also recommended that you do not chew ice or anything hard because it could break the attachments.
Retainers are an important part of orthodontic treatment. Wearing a retainer prevents your teeth from rapidly shifting out of position and undoing all the effort you put into your treatment! Your retainer helps you maintain a great smile for a lifetime.
